It was
1962 when Bing Cosby sang ‘do you hear what I hear’ at Christmas. I wonder if God wants to ask us one of the
questions from the song this advent? ‘Can you see what I see’? Imagine yourself looking in the mirror and as
you do so hear God ask that very question… ‘Can you see what I see’? I don’t know what you see when you look in
the mirror but if you are anything like me you have a list of the
imperfections, failures and future impossibilities. I wonder if you do what I do in seeing in
others strengths and giftedness and then compare them to our own weaknesses and
inadequacies. And when it comes to our
own strengths we see them as insignificant and not worthy of comparison. Does this sound familiar? God asks, ‘can you see what I see’?
We are
not alone with our distorted mirrors!
The bible is full of stories of distorted mirrors. Moses would look in the mirror and see a
stuttering murderer. God asks ‘can you
see what I see’? Because God saw someone
who would approach Pharaoh, do unthinkable miracles and lead a people out of
slavery towards the promise land. Gideon
would look in the mirror and see the least person, in the least family, in the
least tribe in the whole of Israel. God
asks ‘can you see what I see’? Because
God saw him as a mighty warrior who would lead the defeat of the
Midianites. Peter saw himself after the
cross as a failure who had failed Jesus three times. God asks ‘can you see what I see’? Because he saw the man as the rock on which
the entire church would be built upon.
As you look in the mirror, God asks ‘can you see what I see’?
